A recent announcement of the Finnish Government showed how advanced that small country really is. Currently 95% of the residents of Finland have access to the Internet and high technology is valued. They have had a long term goal of bringing the Internet to 100% of their citizens. The deadline has been brought forward to next year. This is now a law. A new goal has been set to bring 100 times faster service by 2015. A recent panel discussion at the Perimeter Institute was entitled 24/7 Wired. They discussed this issue and more. The nations of the world who see the future, see the Internet as a key part of their economic development. Raymond Laflamme. Director Institute for Quantum Computing at Waterloo discussed the speed issue in terms of the famous Moore's Law. (It is an empirical law, not a law of nature) Moore's law states that the possible chip density of computers is doubling every 18 months to two years. This translates roughly to speed. Properly stated by Gordon Moore Intel Cofounder Moore's Law is: |
"The number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years. And Intel has kept that pace for nearly 40 years." The work of Laflamme and others on Quantum Computing has to be ready when the number of transistors on a chip reaches the limit of density dictated by physics and has to move into the subatomic Quantum World, where new physical laws prevail. Communications will have to follow along with processor speed. You will note that the speed of transmission of the Internet has increased very quickly moving from from dial-up to fiber optic in a few short years. In Canada the race for speed is on and it is not mandated by law as in Finland, but is fueled by competition and the economics of distribution. The government has tried to help, however making the right of ways available for cable laying and access. As villages and towns developed around water sources, you will see that the Internet is the new way to bring power to a community. |
