Kincardine mayor Larry Kraemer withdrew from the election for warden of Bruce County after two tie votes at the county council meeting Thursday (Dec. 3).

If the third round had been a tie, the names of Kraemer and Saugeen Shores mayor Mike Smith would have gone into a hat and the winner drawn from it.

"I decided I didn't want to lead the county council with just 50-per-cent support," said Kraemer. "It wouldn't be an honour."

He put his name in for warden because he thought it was time Kincardine had someone in the top spot on county council. Other municipalities have had their heads of council serve two or three times as warden over the years, he said.

Deputy mayor Laura Haight said Kraemer's move was a grand gesture.

Smith will serve a one-year term as warden, taking over from Bill Goetz.
