Huron-Kinloss is hoping that by reducing the cost of a green cone digester to $55 from $75, more township residents will purchase them and cut down on the amount of household waste going into the landfill site.

At the general committee meeting last night (Dec. 7), staff reported the township has sold only 32 of the 200 digesters it purchased. Other municipalities have used a grant through the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Deep Geologic Repository Community Partnership Program to subsidize the cost of the digesters and sold them all.

Staff has submitted a letter of request to the NWMO to subsidize the cost of the digesters, and is proposing to donate five units to each of the public schools to encourage the reduction of household waste.

If the subsidy comes through, it would be like a "Christmas special" on green cone digesters, said administrator Mary Rose Walden
